Summit Theme: Climate Change Mitigation and Renewable Energy Business Development in Student Communities

Summit Date: 3rd and 4th of September 20204

Summit Time: 9am Prompt

Introduction

The Nigeria Students Climate Summit (NSC Summit) is an annual gathering of student leaders, experts, and stakeholders committed to addressing the urgent challenges of climate change and promoting sustainable solutions within Nigerian communities. As climate change impacts accelerate, threatening human health, ecosystems, and agricultural practices, the NSC Summit provides a vital platform for knowledge sharing, skill-building, and collaborative action.

The Urgency

Changes in weather and temperature pose increasing threats to both human communities and countless species in Nigeria. Rising sea levels, deforestation, and species extinction are becoming more frequent, putting entire ecosystems—on land and underwater—at critical risk. The United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) warns that by 2050, humanity will need the resources of three planets to sustain life, creating immense pressure on humans, wildlife, and marine life alike.

Our Mission

Recognizing the pivotal role of Nigerian students as influential communicators and agents of change, the NSC Summit aims to:

  • Expand Knowledge: Provide students with in-depth understanding of climate science, renewable energy technologies, and sustainable development practices.
  • Build Leadership Skills: Equip students with the leadership, advocacy, and entrepreneurial skills necessary to drive climate action in their communities.
  • Support Climate Initiatives: Provide funding and mentorship opportunities to student-led projects focused on climate change mitigation, adaptation, and biodiversity conservation.

The 2025 NSC Summit

The maiden Nigeria Students Climate Summit will be held on September 3rd and 4th, 2024, at the Millennium Auditorium, RUFUS GIWA Polytechnic, Owo, Ondo State, Nigeria. This edition will bring together student union presidents and student union secretaries of universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education in Nigeria, or two authorized students by school management of higher institutions that do not have student union on ground, to tackle these urgent challenges.

The summit will welcome delegates’ participants in person, interested non – delegates virtually, offering opportunities to learn from experts and each other while developing solutions to protect biodiversity across all ecosystems—land, water, and air.

Additionally, twenty student climate champions from the most vulnerable states will be selected to receive financial donations each to implement climate and biodiversity projects in their communities. Through this summit, students will gain the knowledge and tools they need to protect their communities and safeguard the ecosystems that all life depends on.

Looking Ahead

The NSC Summit is envisioned as a rotational event held at different higher institutions across Nigeria each year. The 2025 edition will build upon the success of the inaugural summit, continuing to empower students to become climate leaders and contribute to a sustainable future for Nigeria.
